Confusing Color Optical Illusion



As quickly as you can, say the color of each word. (For instance, for the word "red," you will say "green.") Were you confused? Probably!

Experts aren't sure, but many scientists believe that one reason people have difficulty with this puzzle is because your brain is "primed," or prepared, to picture things the same color as the written word. (That's why this is called a "priming" illusion.) So if the word "red" is actually colored green, then that makes things confusing!

While most humans can see color, scientists aren't sure which animals can.

One possible clue is that if an animal is brightly colored, the species can probably see color. That would make sense: Color is a way some animals attract mates.

Chromatic Afterimage Illusion

Stare at the plus sign on the left for about 30 seconds. As you do this you probably will see some colors around the blue and green circles. After about 30 seconds, shift your gaze to the plus sign on the right. What did you see?

You probably saw a yellow and desaturated reddish circle. Did you notice that they were not there before you tried this experiment? Furthermore, unlike the colored circles on the left, the ones you saw on the right moved around as your eyes moved, which proves that these perceptions are the result of afterimages in your visual system and not some trick of the stimulus presentation on the right.
It is observations such as this that led Ewald Hering to propose the opponent processes theory.

Color Contrast Illusion

Which of the strips below, A or B, corresponds to the green strip positioned on the red and green field? This illusion is based on the effect of simultaneous color contrast.

Howard's Color Contrast illusion

As a reknowned expert in clothing color, I can pick dazzling color schemes. You may notice a variety of effects in the swatches. I am using them to select a fabric for my next pair of trousers and coordinated cap. All of the lines were drawn physically straight, but they may not appear that way.

Try rotating your head back and forth, moving closer, or further away. Look at the swatches from a lower or higher vantage point in addition to looking straight on. You may notice other effects. You might also notice that the simultaneous contrast phenomena change with spatial frequency and orientation. Viewing complementary colors in close proximity will lead to the 'dazzling' or 'shimmering' effect.

Other than the colors in my shirt, there is only one 'red' value and one 'blue' value in all of the swatches. Your monitor and other sources may perform some correction that would limit the contrast, yet the swatches may seem very different.

This afterimage(colour illusion) is a visual impression that remains in the retina after the initial stimulus is removed. The afterimage always has colors that are complementary to those of the original image.

Scintillating Grid

If you look around in the neighbouring figure you will notice the appearance and disappearance of black dots at the crossings.
Even though this figure looks similar to the Hermann-Grid, it is markedly more vivid. Furthermore, the effect is probably caused by different mechanisms than those causing the Hermann-Grid effect.
