Bending lines illusion

The horizontal and vertical lines are parallel but appears to bend; the angles formed by those lines and and it appears to expand. It is said that the illusion is maximized when the intersecting angle is between 10 and 30 degrees. Some references claim that any angle from 0 to 90 degrees produces this illusion, yet this was not supported by other references.

Those references are wrong. Just look at it diagonally and you just see a bunch of squares and black spots. The bends in the lines disappear.
