Best Afterimage Illusion

This is one of the best afterimage illusion.To see the illusion for your self, watch this sequence of images for about 30 seconds (it takes at least 15 seconds for it to really work)
What you should see is, after 20 or 30 seconds, the blank shapes start to be filled with a "ghostly" color. That's the afterimage, and though the actual colors only fill part of the the shapes, the afterimage tends to fill the whole thing. But that's not the neat part. The neat part is that the color of the afterimage (either red or green) depends on the shape of the blank figure! If it's a star (that is, if one of the four points is pointing straight up), the afterimage will be reddish, because red is the opponent color of the green in the colored figure of the same shape. If the same figure is shifted sideways 45 degrees, the afterimage is green, because the original figure of that shape was colored red. What's more, if you view one, and then the other, as in the series above, your after image immediately changes from one color to the other (e.g., red then green in the figures on the right side).

In many natural scenes, portions of occluding surfaces and contours can be camouflaged by having an identical color as their background. It is now well known that the visual system will often generate illusory contours and surfaces in order to fill-in this missing information. It is widely believed that the visual system does this in order to provide the best overall “explanation” of the images that form in our eyes. In this illusion, four circular disks are simply translated back and fourth over a thin square outline. Although all of the image data is fully “explained” by the visible disks, the visual system generates a strong and clearly visible additional illusory contour inside the square outline. This illusion cannot be understood with any known mechanism or theory that has been proposed to explain the formation of illusory contours.

Batman Afterimage Illusion

Just stare at the image below for 30 seconds then look away at a white space in your screen or any white surface and you’ll see the batman logo appearing.

Light After Effect Illusions

You can make this light shine with the power of your mind.

Look at the light bulb for about 20-seconds.

When the time is up, look away from the image to a white area on the screen. You should see a ghostly image of a glowing white light bulb. The after image will fade quickly.

After images are caused by tired light receptors in our eyes. After being excited by light from the image, they continue to send weak signals to the brain. These weak after-signals are always in the opposite or complimentary of the original color. What color is the after image of the orange area? Is it Blue?

Pink Rose Optical Illusion

Stare at the '+' in the middle of the first picture for 20 second, then quickly look at the '+' within the picture of a rose...

You should see now a color image of a rose (pink). This illusion is due to what scientists call ‘color afterimage’ effect. An afterimage is a negative ‘ghost’ of a color seen after prolonged stimulation of the eye. The odd thing about color vision is that pink or magenta color is not in the spectrum of colors (see below), meaning it cannot be generated by a single wavelength of light. Our brains interpret the color sensation of magenta/pink as ‘absence’ of green.

Green Heart Optical Illusion

Stare steadily at the dot in the heart for 30 seconds, then look at a piece of white paper. A faint Red heart surrounded by a bluish outline should mysteriously appear on the paper.



This is called an aftereffect. Staring at the heart overstimulates your eyes' photoreceptors, which are what absorb the light that stimulates vision. So even after you look away from the image, your brain is still receiving messages about it. What you end up seeing are called complementary colors. Red and blue are complementary colors of green and yellow.

Christopher Walken in Space Illusion

Christopher Walken appears to be flying through space. However this is an illusion.

The picture is an animated GIF, and it contains 4 discrete pictures. The first 2 are normal black and white, although slightly shifted in respect to each other. The second 2 are inverted images (i.e. the negative version) and again the 2 images are slightly shifted in respect to each other. When viewed as a sequence, however, Christopher Walken appears to be moving through space - in 1 direction continuously!

Queen Illusion

Stare at the negative image of the Queen for about 1 minute
without moving your eyes. Then look at a blank sheet of paper
or any blank white surface and you'll see the queen.
