Café Wall Illusion

The café wall illusion, sometimes also called the Münsterberg illusion (Ashton Raggatt McDougall 2006), is an optical illusion produced by a black and white rectangular tessellation when the tiles are shifted in a zigzag pattern, as illustrated above. While the pattern seems to diverge towards the upper and lower right corners in the upper figure, the gray lines are actually parallel. Interestingly, the illusion greatly diminishes if black lines are used instead of gray.
Gregory and Heard (1979) first noticed the illusion on the wall decoration of a café in Bristol, England. The café wall illusion is only one among many visual distortion effects involving parallel lines. The most famous example of this kind is Zöllner's illusion.
The image above shows a picture of a building in Melbourne, Australia designed to exhibit this illusion (C. L. Taylor, pers. comm., Aug. 5, 2006). The building, completed in 2006, is part of Melbourne's Digital Harbour Port 1010 and houses the Australian Customs Service (Ashton Raggatt McDougall 2006).

What are sun dogs?
Sun dogs are bright spots that appear on either side of the sun when there are thin layers of high ice crystal clouds otherwise known as Cirrus clouds. This can also happen at night. These are called moon dogs.

Circle Size Illusion
Which red circle is larger?
They are both the same size.
Explanation
When we look at a two dimensional object, our eyes automatically try to convert it to three dimensions, because we live in a 3D world.
In this optical illusion, since the upper tire (gray circle) is smaller, we assume it is farther away than the lower tire. The inner white circles are the same size, but since the upper white circle covers, proportionally, more of the gray area, we assume it is larger.
Variations of this type of perspective optical illusion are very common.

Pisa Leaning Tower Photography Trick
Here is a novel illusion that is as striking as it is simple. The two images of the Leaning Tower of Pisa are identical, yet one has the impression that the tower on the right leans more, as if photographed from a different angle. The reason for this is because the visual system treats the two images as if part of a single scene. Normally, if two adjacent towers rise at the same angle, their image outlines converge as they recede from view due to perspective, and this is taken into account by the visual system. So when confronted with two towers whose corresponding outlines are parallel, the visual system assumes they must be diverging as they rise from view, and this is what we see.
