The Devils Triangle illusion

What is wrong with this triangle? Could you use wood and nails to build something in three dimensions that looks just like this?
In fact you can, although it might take you a while to figure out what shape you would need to construct. Why is it so hard to figure out?
Because your wooden construction would look like this image from only one very special viewpoint. Your Visual Intelligence normally rejects interpretations of images which would entail that the eye is viewing the image from a very special viewpoint.
So your visual intelligence refuses to tell you what the construction should be.
Instead you must rely on your rational intelligence to figure it out, and your rational intelligence is, in these matters, much slower than your Visual Intelligence.

Animal Lover Steve Irwin-Optical Illusion

This optical illusion relies on a principle called "Chromatic Adaptation".

An object may be viewed under various conditions. For example, it may be illuminated by the sunlight, the light of a fire, or a harsh electric light. In all of these situations, the visual system indicates that the object has the same color: an apple always appears red, whether viewed at night or during the day. This feature of the visual system is called chromatic adaptation.

Have you ever entered a movie theater on a sunny afternoon? The room probably appeared completely dark but as your visual system adjusted to the reduced level of light you were able to see better after a few moments.

This "adaptation mechanism" allows our eyes to recover from an oversensitivity to a particular stimuli. "Chromatic adaptation" occurs when our eyes adjust to certain color stimuli. Chromatic adaptation is one of the more easily fooled aspects of vision, and is prone to some of the most spectacular optical illusions.

Instructions:Keep Staring at the dot in the middle for 20 seconds or more without moving your eyes.

You can do this at the office, in school, or even at a bar. Write down a phrase and repeat words like the - at -or - and. You'll see that most people are fooled

Pope or Devil Optical Illusion

The recent installation of Pope Benedict XVI gave rise to numerous stories in newspapers across the world. There were literally thousands of photos used by various news services.

Imagine the surprise of many faithful Catholics in New York when they saw this AP wire service photo used in amNew York newspaper.

In this photo, due to the optical illusion of horns coming out of the Pope's head it is hard to tell if this is a man of God or possibly a stooge of the devil. Needless to say many people took time to write the newspaper and let them know that they weren't happy by this illusion.

The newspaper printed the below two letters they received and an apology to anyone who may have been offended by this optical illusion.

Rainmaker Illusion

Funny idea, have to admit. Maybe not the best optical illusion around, but still really nice effect. Statue of an Angel, playing a flute, gives opinion that flute is magical, creating stormy clouds... Cool!

Swimming Pool Illusion

Impossible figures can be drawn on paper but can't exist in real life. Take "The Pool" for example : a beautifully made image of a swimming pool. The man on the ladder won't get into the pool however ... although it's taking him horizontally, the ladder is connecting the two sides of the pool.

Cat woman Illusion

We can create textures that disappear with viewing distance. This picture shows an example of a woman’s face that turns into a cat when looking close. Note that this effect can not be obtained by superimposing the woman’s face and the cat’s face using transparency. Using transparency (additive superposition) creates a face that will not change with distance.
